Hello
fourth grade families! First, thank you all so much for showering me with love
on my birthday. You made my day
special! The sweet cards from your kids
were creative, fun and heart-warming. We
hope you are getting back into the “swing of things” with our little mini week
back. It was nice to kind of ease back
into the routine. I had a delightful break with backyard camping
with the grandkids, a ballroom competition with my husband, and working on
projects. I am designing and creating a
new ballroom gown and redoing window coverings.
If you did not know I was named “Miss Gold Thimble” of Nobel Junior High. 😊. My mom is an excellent seamstress, and the
projects gave me an excuse to spend some good time with her.
Here is
a snapshot of the upcoming week.
Language Arts
Grammar –We will be learning about direct objects. We continue classifying and diagramming all parts of speech learned so far. Students have examples of many diagrams in their red spirals and will be reviewing these with daily practice.
Poetry - "Beowulf" by anonymous is introduced and will be due by November 5th. Students will memorize a small portion of this epic poem which was written between 700-1000 AD.
Literature - We started reading Robin Hood so please make sure your scholar has their book here. We will read looking for evidence as to whether Robin Hood was a hero or a villain. Students will need to be annotating their text so that they can quote text and give examples when it comes time to write our Robin Hood essay. Fourth grade will write an essay about Robin Hood and culminate this reading with a wonderful Robin Hood party in December.
Composition - We will finish writing introductory and conclusion paragraphs about Charlemagne. Their red spirals are their resource tools for the writing process and examples.
Latin & Greek Roots – See link on right side of the blog.
Philosophy - We will discuss whether or not you should be rewarded for your efforts in school.
Math - Unit 2 - We
will continue with 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication and use estimation to see
if our answer is reasonable, we will explore various methods of multiplication and
do word problems involving multiplication of 2-digit by 2-digit numbers. Then we will review all of unit 2 and
conclude Friday with a test over some key concepts covered from the beginning
of the year and the concepts taught in Unit 2.
Science – We will review what we learned about
the water cycle and clouds. Take some time this weekend to observe the
atmosphere and the clouds with your child. Ask your kids about the
following terms: hydrologic cycle, evaporation, water vapor, condensation,
precipitation, transpiration, atmosphere, dew point, and these types of
clouds: cumulus, cirrus, stratus and cumulonimbus. We will move into learning about weather and
the influence of high and low pressure on weather. We will also discuss how to use various weather
instruments and the layers of the atmosphere.
History We will continue reading in our history
textbook to learn about the system of feudalism. We will read and discuss
the organization of The Manor and the roles of the landlord as well as the
serfs who lived on the manor estate.
Hope
you have a fantastic week! Thank you for making time to meet with each of us to
discuss your precious child! We are blessed to serve them as well as you.
