Q3W8

 Q3W8

Hello!

Only three weeks left in the quarter. I did warn you that if you blink, time will seemingly slip on by. It is vital that we remain dedicated and focused on the upcoming weeks, as each assignment is crucial to succeeding. There will be comprehension checks, math tests, AASA practice, etc. All of these test the mettle of the fourth graders, showing them just how far they have come and proving that they are on the cusp of conquering a challenging, yet rewarding, year.

News:

No school on Monday, 2/20, for President’s Day. We hope you enjoy it!

Unit 8 Math Test on Wednesday 2/22. This test covers area and perimeter.

NO SMART WATCHES! Fitbits are fine. If there are any questions about what constitutes a smart watch, let us know. Students can keep them powered off in their backpack for after school use, but not on their person. This is for many reasons, one of which being that certain tests can be completely invalidated by the presence of such a device.

Please donate tall plastic bottles! In the first weeks of the fourth quarter, each student will be making lung models using such bottles. They should not be too wide, easy to cut through, and tall. A perfect example is a 16 oz “SmartWater” bottle.

AASA Testing DatesApril 6th, 14th, and 21st. Please do not schedule any absences for these dates. These are important tests in which we spend a lot of time preparing.

Curriculum:

ELA:

In grammar, we are practicing our easy writing. We will be repeatedly practicing the starting steps of writing an essay, which includes drawing an idea web, discussing how you would read the articles, describing the notion of highlighting, creating a graphic organizer, and writing a topic sentence.

Literature finishes Prince CaspianMake sure that your scholar has their copy as we will begin reading immediately. We will be reading chapter 13-15 and using them as a source of discussion regarding comparison, cause and effect, and belief.

For our poem, “Paul Revere’s Ride,” the 8th stanza must be mastered by Friday, February 24th. It is important to note that Paul Revere’s Ride is our only poetry recital for this quarter, meaning it has a tremendous impact on ELA grade, so please ensure that your scholar is studying it every week.

In WWE, we will once again go through the process of essay writing. From start to finish, students will be spending the week writing a full essay on the concept of Geocaching.

Latin and Greek roots pick up next week with the following roots: tempus/temporis and annus. Students will be expected to spell the following words: temperature, temporal, temporary, contemporary, extemporaneous, annual, anniversary, biannual, biennial, and perennial.

For philosophy, we forego any discussion in order to ensure more time for writing practice.

Math:

In math, we are preparing and taking our Unit 8 Test, on Wed 2/22, on area and perimeter. We then begin analysis of lines, points, angles, etc.

History:

In history, we will continue to see the path Arizona takes to become a state. The next steps include the Mexican-American War and the establishment of the New Mexico and Arizona territories.

Science:

In science, we will be continuing our unit on geologic events with our final event; geysers. This will prepare us for the comprehension check in which students will be able to choose which event they would like to discuss.
