Q2W9
Our team hopes your Thanksgiving holidays were enjoyable and a time to reflect on what is truly important in life. We are looking forward to three more weeks of school until our Winter Break begins on 12/20.
Field Trip Update: The park we were originally planning to eat lunch and play at is starting a construction project this week. Alternatively, we will go to Kiwanis Park to eat and play on the playground after the Museum of Illusions.
-Make sure students are studying regularly throughout the quarter: review History chapters read in class, review Science spiral notes, study Roots definitions flash cards, study multiplication flash cards on missed problems from Rocket Math tests, and reading 6-8, 150 page or more books with journal entries.
-All late assignments will receive a 10% deduction per day late in Q2-4.
NEWS:
On December 17th, Fourth Grade is holding our annual Robin Hood Party.
Dress Code Notes:
Only school logo sweaters are allowed to be worn in the building. Non-dress code sweaters/fleeces/jackets can be worn at recess only and must be in their backpack/cubby while in the building. Now that the weather is getting cooler, remember that long sleeve shirts worn underneath a polo can be white, maroon, navy, or black. Black or blue leggings are allowed under skirts, but they should reach the sock line (not capri length).
CURRICULUM:
ELA:
The last poem of Quarter 2 is "Norman and Saxon". It is due on December 13th.
LITERATURE We have finished "Robin Hood". In Q3, we'll spend the first weeks using our Literature time on our Poetry unit. Students will need the poetry anthology from the required list, "The Harp and Laurel Wreath". They will also utilize this book in fifth grade. In Q3W4, the fourth grade will begin the next book in the Chronicles of Narnia series, "Prince Caspian". If your child has never read the prior, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", please insure they read it before we begin the next book.
We finish our COMPOSITION program for the quarter with the writing of the Robin Hood 5-Paragraph Persuasive Essay by finishing rough drafts, editing and composing the final drafts. These must be completed (in-class) for scholars to attend the Robin Hood Party.
In GRAMMAR, we begin chapter 8 concepts which include possessive nouns. These act as adjectives modifying nouns in sentences.
Transitive and Intransitive Verbs
In LATIN AND GREEK ROOTS our roots are mikros (small), megas (big, large, great), and magnus (big, large, great). Their derivatives are: microphone, microbe, microscope, micron, microwave, megaphone, megalith, megalophonous, magnify, magnitude, magnificent, magnanimous, magnate, Magna Carta. The Roots test will be held on Friday. Scholars should study their 31 Roots Cards every day for 5-10 minutes.
For PHILOSOPHY, we will use the time to finish up all the work from the end of the quarter prior to the next day's Robin Hood Party.
Math:
In Math, we will Continue Chapter 6 about fractions greater than 1 applying mixed number and improper fractional concepts for comparing, ordering and computing fractions.
Math Test Corrections:
Students will attach a separate piece of paper to their graded math tests and write the problem number of each problem missed. They will re-do the problem correctly and show their work. They will also write a short sentence about why they missed that problem. Students can earn up to 5 points for their corrections. Students who missed no problems, do not need to submit corrections.
History:
In History, we will finish the book reading chapters 7-9 over the Dynasties of China. Scholars will take a Comprehension Check in W10. They should use their completed practice comprehension check to study. They will write on one of the Dynasties of China.
Science:
Our Meteorology Unit has concluded for the quarter, and we will begin a short 6 lesson unit on Magnetism on Wednesday.
