Hello fourth grade families! I (Mrs. Shroll) am off to breakfast with my special god daughter this morning (Sat) and then to a wedding this afternoon/evening. On Sunday, my husband and I will enjoy a local jazz performance and dinner with friends. Here is a snapshot of our week 3 academics:

Language Arts

Grammar – This week we have a grammar quiz on Wednesday. Students will continue working with indirect and direct objects, prepositional phrases, adjectives, adverbs, verbs and nouns. Students should review their returned assignments and Daily Grams which are corrected each week.

Poetry - "Beowulf" recitations are due Friday, November 5th.

Literature - We will read Chapter 9-13 in Robin Hood while discussing paraphrasing and summarizing. Students will complete a story map as well.

Composition – Students did a fantastic job with their Charlemagne introductory and conclusion paragraphs in class. This week they complete a Writing With Ease (WWE) summary in class and discuss narrative perspective/point of view. Students also begin AZ Merit practice.

Latin & Greek Roots – see link on right side

Philosophy - We will discuss giving charity and reflect on Moses Maimonides, an influential Torah scholar during the Middle Ages.

Math – Students begin Unit 3 on fractions. We go over equivalent fractions, simplest form and how to add fractions. Students will work with manipulatives and explore concepts like “how many halves make a whole?”, “how many thirds make a whole?”, “how many fourths make a whole?”, etc. Students continue with math facts every week.

Science – Students begin learning about the Earth’s atmospheric layers and the differences between them. They will learn how the sun’s energy transfers to Earth and how the atmosphere provides a safe balance for life on Earth. Students will understand radiation, conduction, and convection with a teacher led experiment.

History – On Monday we have a feudalism comprehension check. Students are expected to write all they know about this political, military, and social system that dominated medieval Europe. To prepare, they should review their text book (pg 56) and all returned/corrected homework. We then explore castles, city life, and the role of knights. In our history text we will cover chapters 8, 11, and 9 next week.

We wish you a fun Halloween weekend! Please do not send candy to school for your child’s snacks. The extra sugar highs/lows can slow down their scholarly thinking and affect their behavior so please save the sweets treats for home. :)
