Fourth grade had a wonderful 2nd week.  We are loving getting to know your amazing children!  They are full of wonder and excitement and that motivates and excites us.  Seeing their young souls ignite and take in all that our rich curriculum has to offer is so fun.  My plans for the weekend are to catch up on schoolwork and finish undone projects from the summer.  I hope your weekend will be productive and enjoyable and you will find time to connect with family.

NOTE:  Curriculum Night: Wednesday, 8/31, 6:30pm-8pm. Parents will start for a general 3-5 meeting in the MPR.  Please plan to be there.  Hearing what we will share about fourth grade will make the whole year go smoother and provide a foundation for you to have a common bond about what your children will be experiencing and learning this year.

Wednesday clubs begin this week.  Pick up time is immediately at 2:00pm and 3:00pm.

ROOM PARENTS NEEDED:  Some fourth grades are in need of  PSO Liaison/ Room Parent volunteers.  If you are interested please reach out to your child's teacher.

Watch this short video with your child about Personality vs. Character and discuss how it relates to Archway's Core Virtues (found in student agendas).

MATH

This week we will be adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers, and using them in word problems.  We will be sharing how to use bar models to help students visualize the word problems and figure out the operations needed to compute the correct answer.

SCIENCE

Tuesday, 8/23 is the Comprehension Check for the Scientific Method.  Students will need to be able to list the 5 steps and define/explain them in detail giving examples from one of the experiments we have discussed and write about the different types of variables, including their definitions (Independent, Dependent, Constant, Control).  Students should use their green spirals to study.  As a study method you can have them write a practice paragraph (5-7 sentences about everything they know) and have them bring it in for their teacher to check.

 Language Arts

Grammar – We are analyzing and diagramming simple sentences. Students will identify principal elements (subject noun and predicate). We continue note taking in red ELA spirals as well as doing lessons in the Well-Ordered Language workbook. Your child should be able to tell you about the four kinds of sentences (declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory).

Writing– Continue practicing finding key details in long texts. We read long texts and write a short 3-4 sentence summary. Students will also review paragraphs and topic sentences.

Poetry – Afternoon on a Hill is due by Friday, 8/26. Students will recite the poem in front of their classmates. This poem is on a small piece of paper and located in their clear plastic envelope. Click link to the side for the poem

Literature – Wonderful Wizard of Oz chapters 8-11 are read this week. Students were given an assignment to illustrate Chapters 1-7 and write one complete sentence describing that chapter/drawing. Please help them make sure their sentence begins with a capital letter and has ending punctuation.

Latin & Greek Roots – Students will have a spelling test on root derivatives of “bi”, “tri”, and “quad”. Click the list to the right side for the 15 words. Tests are always on Fridays. Students should know all previous root meanings (pre, post, unus, mono, poly). We make flashcards each week. All flashcards are stored in the clear plastic envelope that should be in their YELLOW folder. Please ask your student to show you their flashcards. They have worked very hard on these and should spend a few minutes every night going through each one.

Reading - Make sure your students are reading a 150+ page chapter book, at the rate of about 150 pages every week to week and a half.  They then record this in their Roots Journal on their Book List page.

HISTORY

Maps Test is Next Thursday, 8/25. Students should use the graded review done this last week to study.

This week students will learn how to read physical maps
