NOTE: We
are noticing some missing work, and we would like parents to know
that you should expect homework every night.
Students always need to read 20 min., study their roots, and math facts, math practice of the concept taught, and often have upcoming tests to practice for.
We have given the students a sheet titled “Active Study Strategies” to
help them review and retain information.
When students do not do the assigned work they ae behind the next day
and it is difficult for them to catch up.
Watch this short video with your child about Personality vs. Character and discuss
how it relates to Archway's Core Virtues (found in student agendas).
MATH
This week we will be continuing our study of factors, multiples,
prime numbers and multiplying 3 and 4-digit numbers by a 2-digit number.
SCIENCE
We will culminate our chemistry
unit. We will explore mixtures, solutions, and suspensions and will look
into the concept s of concentration and saturation as well as what is a solute
and what is a solvent. They will have
their chemistry comprehension check this Friday, Sept 16th. They will need to write about matter, using
these terms correctly: atoms, elements,
molecules and compounds, compare and contrast two items using the terms mass,
volume and density, explain what a physical change is and a chemical change and
give an example of each. They should
practice writing their paragraph this week using their spiral notes and folds.
Language Arts
Grammar – Students will begin "Chapter 3 Adjectives"
in Well Ordered Language workbook. Each week we complete a page of Daily Grams where
students practice editing and parts of speech. Your students have worked hard
with nouns, verbs, and adverbs up to this point. We continue identifying declarative,
imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences and finding the principal
elements in a sentence.
Writing – We review paragraphs, transitions, and different
kinds of hooks. Students will practice writing their own hooks. An essay hook
is 1-2 opening sentences that capture readers' attention and help them decide
if they want to continue reading the text. We also will review different kinds
of fiction writing and do reading comprehension practice with text.
Poetry –
Ozymandias is our new poem and is due on September 23rd. Video Here
Literature – We begin our new literature book, Pollyanna, by Eleanor H.
Porter. Students will need to bring it on Monday. They will have an assignment
on Wednesday where they have to draw Pollyanna's room in the attic.
Latin
& Greek Roots – Students will have a
spelling test on the roots derived from re, syn/sym. This list of words is
accessible by clicking the link to the right.
Reading - Make sure your
students are reading a 150+ page chapter book, at the rate of about 150 pages
every week to week and a half. They then record this in their Roots
Journal on their Book List page.
HISTORY
There is a test on Mountains of the World on Thursday, 9/15. We will be reviewing world mountains on
Monday and Tuesday.
