Hello!

The end is nigh! In a good way. This week marks the final week of significant academic content. This includes our Roots Final Test and our final 5-paragraph Essay as well as wrapping up the American revolution. Math and Science have already shifted towards fun activities, and next week the other subjects will follow. This means that the light has appeared at the end of the tunnel of fourth grade, but we do need to reach it with one final herculean effort that proves that we can confidently pass the students on to fifth grade. I am so proud and excited to see them conquer fourth grade.
News:
No more tag! Or anything like it! Unfortunately, there have been several injuries as a result of this style of game and therefore we will not be playing it any more for the rest of the year. Use this as an opportunity to ask your students what they do at recess as it does give insight to their social interests.
Kingdom Assembly on Tuesday, 5/16. Here is Mrs. Covone describing this culmination of her team’s hard work:
“We have an exciting announcement to make! On Tuesday, the 16th, we will be hosting our highly anticipated End of the Year Assembly. This event is where we will announce the Kingdom Winner, we will also be unveiling our New Guardians for the upcoming academic year of 23-24.
We invite all our scholars to participate by wearing the Kingdom Shirt on that day. Alternatively, they can wear any shirt in their Kingdom color (please avoid pop culture references). However, we kindly request that the rest of the uniform remains unchanged.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude for your support throughout this year's Kingdoms program.”
Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 17th. The students have been practicing hard to put on a wonderful show and you are invited to see it. As with other concerts, this will be an after school activity in which students will dress the part and amaze us with all of their dedicated work.
Roots Final Test on Thursday, May 18th. Students will be expected to know all 76 of the roots we have discussed this year. They should know each of their definitions as they have acted as the framework for our entire spelling curriculum.
“If” Poem Due on Friday, May 19th. It is a long one, so ensure that your scholar is spending time studying it each day. I’d recommend that they memorize the first 3 stanzas by the end of this week.
Carry On, Mr. Bowditch Party on May 25th. This is our end of year party celebrating all that the fourth graders have overcome with a fun nautical theme to spice it up. Be sure to check for opportunities to volunteer as it is a big event to finish off a big year.
Comedy Show on May 26th. Thanks to the creative minds of two students in 4B, Mrs. Thompson and I are organizing our first ever 4th-grade comedy show. This will be a fun activity to further create lasting memories on the last day of the school year.
Curriculum:
ELA:
In GRAMMAR, we will be utilizing the time to get a head star in our final writing project of the year; a five-paragraph essay with choice of prompt.
LITERATURE is continuing with Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, and we will be reading chapters 20-22 throughout the week, using them as an excellent springboard for discussions about foreshadowing, and the many virtues displayed by Nat Bowditch. Students must have their copy of Carry On, Mr. Bowditch if they do not already.
For our POETRY, we are officially onto our final poem for the year; “If” by Rudyard Kipling. It is a long poem that will be due on Friday, May 19th, so ensure that your student is preparing for this final recitation trail.
In WWE, we are finishing our final writing project; a five-paragraph essay with different choices for the prompt. There are two options: (1) to write about the virtues of Nathaniel Bowditch, or (2) to describe the significance of the firebrands of the American Revolution.
In LATIN AND GREEK ROOTS, we will culminate the entire year’s worth of root into fun reviews and a final assessment. Students will be expected to know all 76 roots that we have discussed over the year. We have been warning of this test, so I hope your scholar is prepared. One way they can be prepared is by utilizing the 76 index cards that we have made together to study for this test.
For PHILOSOPHY, we will utilize the time for more writing.
Math:
In math, we are finishing our year with fun ways to enjoy the world of mathematics. That includes a plethora of different activities and games, all with the express purpose to celebrate the hard work of the students, who have conquered so many mathematical concepts throughout the year. It is one way we plan to end the year with a blast.
History:
In history, we will march on to the end of the revolution, recapping what we have learned as well as introducing a few more key figures. We will be visiting the Battle of Yorktown and learning how the moment made the world turn upside down. This will mark the end of our history curriculum.
Science:
In science, we will be learning about several famous scientists who have molded our very lives. We will be doing so with many hands-on projects; from posters to acting, always culminating in a light-hearted presentation. This is another way we seek to end fourth grade on a joyous note.
Remember, the blog is updated weekly. Be sure to come back frequently to see any upcoming events or changes in fourth grade.
