Hello There Great Hearts Families,
We're excited to be touring the state capitol this Friday! Here's a look at what we'll be working on until then:
Spalding: We have a normal week for Spalding. Look for 30 words coming home on Monday in preparation for our Friday test. You can ask your students to carefully review their practice tests in order to see what they will need to study Thursday night. We'll plan to take this test when we return from the capitol.
Language Arts: We will have a grammar quiz this week to review some of our newer concepts and review parts of speech. This will probably be on Tuesday or Wednesday. You can help your child study by asking them to teach you about the notes in their red spirals. For the remainder of the week, we will learn about adjectival and adverbial prepositional phrases and how to diagram them. We will also complete our unit in poetry.
Science: We've had so much fun learning about the plates of earth beneath our feet, and mushing up some graham crackers to do so! We will have our comprehension check on Monday, answering the question - Why is Earth's surface always changing? Then we will take a closer look at the seismic waves that cause earthquakes and tsunamis. We've covered a lot of new terms in our geology unit, so our short week (due to the field trip) makes this a great time to review spiral notes with your child.
History: We've been learning about the first people to live in what is now our home-Arizona. This week, we have a comprehension check on Tuesday. Students will need to be able to discuss the ancient people groups they've written about in their history folds. To help them study, you can ask them questions like: What were the lives of the Hohokam, Mogollon, and Ancient Puebloan people like? What are they remembered for? Describe their lives and what we know about them.
Math: We are deep in decimals! There will be a test coming up the first week of February covering our unit in decimals. As always, test corrections from previous tests and quizzes are an important way to make sure your child is ready for any review questions that may be on the test. This week, students will hone their abilities to round, convert, and compare three place decimals. You can continue to have them review the math facts coming home to help them improve their mental math skills!
Reminders: Please send The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian with your child this week. We will begin the following Monday.
