Hello There 4th Grade Families!
We had a great week learning about the layers of Earth, decimals, and poetry. Here's a look at what's ahead this coming short week:
Spalding: We will just have 21 words on our test this week with only Tuesday and Wednesday words. Please remind your child to have someone read them the words while they do their homework. Their words should be checked and corrected and written two more times if they were done incorrectly.
Science: After learning about the layers of the earth beneath our feet, we'll dig deeper and discuss the tectonic plates and convection heating inside Earth. Here's the big question for our geology unit we will want students to be able to answer: Why is the surface of Earth always changing? Heads up, we will also do a spiral check this week.
Math: Now that we know about decimals, we'll be comparing, adding, and subtracting two digit decimals (hundredths). At the end of the week, we'll learn about three-digit decimals (thousandths) and how to find them on a number line. Converting decimals with tenths and hundredths to fractions would be a great concept to review with your child as they do their math homework. Please continue to work on Math Facts of all four operations.
History: We now know that the first people to live in what is now Arizona were the Paleo Indians. Your child can teach you all about them using the folds we made in class. Look for more folds as we discover some of the other ancient cultures who lived in our state and study how they lived. In history, we are emphasizing the importance of explaining our answers with evidence-just like archeologists need to do when they tell us about history.
Language: The third stanza of our Paul Revere poem will be due at the end of the week after we write our own parts of speech and diamante poems. We'll also be learning new concepts in grammar such as diagramming compound subjects and predicates, compound sentences, conjunctions, and complex sentences. You can ask your child to teach you how to diagram for an easy way to help them study for the test we will have the following week.
Our State Capitol Field trip will be on Friday the 31st. Please use the link below to register your child for this trip. Every child must be registered to attend. Chaperone registration has already opened. We can take 5 chaperones per class.

We will begin doing literature circles again in February once we finish our poetry unit.
