Hello Fourth Grade Families,

This quarter it's my, Mrs. Scott's, turn to take over this blog. Can you believe it's 2021? We hope you've had a relaxing and regenerating break. I know mine was filled with laughter and tears of joy as my oldest brother married his soulmate. It was a hard first Christmas without our mom and dad, but it was a beautiful way to spend time with family. I'm blessed to be the middle of 6 children (technically 9 when you count my step siblings of 28 years). Our gatherings are always chaos and comfort all in one.

I know that the whole fourth grade team is excited to get back into the swing of things this week. We're ready to hit the ground running with many new units from the fourth grade curriculum.

Let's take a look at what we're doing this first (half) week back.

Language Arts - Our Literature book is "The Harp and Laurel Wreath" and your child should bring it to school on Wednesday with all of the school supplies they brought home before the break. They should not bring in Prince Caspian until we're done with our poetry unit.

Poetry - We're learning "Paul Revere's Ride" with stanzas 1 and 2 due January 15th. Your child received a copy of the poem with due dates prior to the break. If they need a new copy, please ask them to talk to their teacher on Wednesday. The recitation of this poem will be different than the others as they will do it in parts, most likely at the start of the school day by the day the stanzas are due.

Grammar - This week we'll be reviewing classifying and diagramming. Please be sure your child brings in their LA spiral.

Literature - We begin our Poetry Unit on Wednesday. We're be learning a variety of different poems and writing some of our own. It might be fun to write some family poems following the rules of the types of poems we learn each day.

Math - Before the break we started Unit 5, measurements, in their 4A Singapore Math Books. We will review what we've learned and continue through Unit 5. Once this unit is done we will move into their 4B books. Each student will need their 4A workbook and textbook through this week and next, with their Unit 5 test on Wednesday, January 13th. They will start into their 4B books on Thursday, January 14th. Please be sure they also bring back their whiteboard and supplies (if they have it at home), as well as their Math spiral.

Science - We're starting our Geology Unit this week (but would like to wait on them bringing in any unusual rocks they have until we get closer to that part of the unit).

History - We'll start our AZ History Unit this week.

I'm not sure if it's still happening, but......The Every Kid in a Park program gives fourth-graders free passes to national parks, monuments, forests and other federally managed lands starting Sept. 1 every year. Each pass is good for all the children in the family and up to three adults and is good for a year.

That's about it. Enjoy a few more days off with your amazing fourth grader! We'll see them Wednesday!

Warmly,

Mrs. Scott
