MATH

This week we will be solving 1-2 step word problems using addition and subtraction of  multi-digit numbers.  We will be sharing how to use bar models to help students visualize the word problems and figure out the operations needed to compute the correct answer. The Unit 2 test over addition/subtraction of multi-digit numbers is Friday, Sept. 2nd.

Parents- Please watch this video explaining the bar model method with your child.  Scholars will be expected to solve addition and subtraction problems using a bar model, expression, work and a sentence for this Friday's test.

SCIENCE

We will be continuing our chemistry unit.  It will be a very interactive week with cool demonstrations and experiments to spark wonder and search for truth.

 Language Arts

Grammar – We are introducing adverbs. Students analyze and diagram simple sentences. There is a Parts of Speech grammar quiz on Thursday that will cover nouns, pronouns, verbs, and adverbs. Students will make flashcards to help them memorize the definitions.

Writing– Continue writing key details in long texts. This week we have a graded summary and a graded dictation covering a text about chemistry and atoms.  Scholars focus on a good sentence, expressing a complete thought, containing a subject noun and a predicate.

Poetry – The new poem is "The Moon" by Robert Louis Stevenson. Students will recite this in the front of their classmates by Friday, September 9th. This poem is on a small piece of paper and located in their clear plastic envelope. Click the link to the side for the poem.

.

Literature – Wonderful Wizard of Oz chapters 13-17 are read this week. Students will need to bring in the next literature selection, Pollyanna. We begin this the week after Labor Day. Parent reading groups will start in September. Please look for a signup from your class liasons.

Latin & Greek Roots – THIS WEEK THE SPELLING TEST IS ON THURSDAY. Students will have a spelling test on root derivatives of “co" and "contra". Click the list to the right side for the 10 words. Students should know all previous root meanings (pre, post, unus, mono, poly, bi, tri, quad). We make flashcards each week. All flashcards are stored in the clear plastic envelope that should be in their YELLOW folder. Please ask your student to show you their flashcards. They have worked very hard on these and should spend a few minutes every night going through each one as well as ALL flashcards.

Reading - Make sure your students are reading a 150+ page chapter book, at the rate of about 150 pages every week to week and a half.  They then record this in their Roots Journal on their Book List page.

HISTORY
