There is no school
Monday, 9/5 due to Labor Day holiday.
NOTE: We
are beginning to notice lots of missing work, and we would like parents to know
that you should expect homework every night.
Students always need to read 20 min., study their roots, and math facts,
and often have upcoming tests to practice for.
We have given the students a sheet titled “Active Study Strategies” to
help them review and retain information.
When students do not do the assigned work they ae behind the next day
and it is difficult for them to catch up.
Wednesday clubs have
begun. Pick up time is immediately at 2:00pm and 3:00pm. Please
make sure your children know what club you have signed them up for and when you
will pick them up. Note that students with last names ending in A-M are
on the parking lot (North most side) and M-L are on the building side.
Watch this short video with your child about Personality vs. Character and discuss
how it relates to Archway's Core Virtues (found in student agendas).
MATH
This week we will be moving into a new chapter on multiplication
and factors. They will need to correct
their Ch 2 test by taking a SEPARATE piece of paper that they staple to the
original test. They NEVER make any
changes on the original. On the separate
piece of paper, they must show their work or explain what they got wrong. If they do these things, they will receive a
half point back for every correct correction.
SCIENCE
We will be continuing our chemistry
unit. We will explore physical properties and physical versus chemical changes.
Language Arts
Grammar –
We are continuing our study of adverbs. Students analyze and diagram simple
sentences. There is a grammar quiz on Friday, 9/9 where students are expected to analyze and diagram sentences with adverbs. Students should review their
flashcards to help them memorize the definitions of the parts of speech we've covered thus far.
Writing– Continue writing key
details in long texts. This week we have a non-graded summary and dictation covering a text about platinum. Scholars focus on writing a
good sentence, expressing a complete thought, containing a subject noun and a
predicate.
Poetry – The new poem is
"The Moon" by Robert Louis Stevenson. Students will recite this in
the front of their classmates by Friday, September 9th. This poem is on a small
piece of paper and located in their clear plastic envelope. Click the link to
the side for the poem.
Literature – Wonderful Wizard of Oz chapters 18-24 will be read this week.
Students will need to bring in the next literature selection, Pollyanna. Watch
for an e-mail from your class parent regarding sign ups for reading
groups.
Latin & Greek Roots –Students will have a spelling test on root derivatives of
“un" and "dis". Click the list to the right side for the words. Students should know all previous
root meanings (pre, post, unus,
mono, poly, bi, tri, quad, con, contra). We make flashcards each week. All
flashcards are stored in the clear plastic envelope that should be in their
YELLOW folder. Please ask your student to show you their flashcards. They
have worked very hard on these and should spend a few minutes every night going
through each one as well as ALL flashcards.
Reading -
Make sure your students are reading a 150+ page chapter book, at the rate of
about 150 pages every week to week and a half. They then record this in
their Roots Journal on their Book List page.
HISTORY
There
is a test on Mountains of the World on Thursday, 9/15.
