Hello!
We are in the second to last week of quarter 1, and it is important to check in with your students to see how they are managing. This quarter acts as an important metric of how student are acclimating to fourth grade, showing them how vital it is to put in the work in order to succeed. Their grades will reflect exactly that. Before quarter 2 begins, we will be conducting parent meeting with every parent to see how we can better help a student embrace the responsibilities of fourth grade or how to keep them on the right path, depending on the scholar's success. So these final weeks are the last chance to influence those quarter 1 scores, so please stay vigilant.
NEWS:
-Grammar Test next week.
-10/6 Last Day of Quarter 1, which is a half day.
CURRICULUM:
ELA:
We have no new poems for POETRY RECITATION. Students will be preforming the poem "Ozymandias" by Percy B. Shelley if they have not yet.
LITERATURE continues book, Pollyanna, so please ensure your student has their copy at school. Furthermore, ensure they have the right edition (it should have a yellow cover), as we did change editions this year to be mindful of the cost. This story is an engaging one that we will use to explore the genre of historical fiction and analyze some virtuous behavior. We will be reading chapters 14-20.
We continue our COMPOSITION program with lessons on improving our sentence structures with compound and complex sentences. From there we spend time practicing introductory paragraphs in order to gain preparation for the eventual 5-paragraph essay we plan to write.
In GRAMMAR, we discuss our final grammar subject of the quarter, direct objects. This will prepare us for the final Quarter 1 Grammar Test which will be in week 9.
In LATIN AND GREEK ROOTS, we will be learning our next three roots; less, and able. With them we will learn the definition and spelling of the following: effortless, fearless, reckless, speechless, worthless, odorless, tireless, selfless, honorable, imaginable, detectable, laughable, renewable, irreversible, and reversible.
For PHILOSOPHY, we discuss the question: "Is Pollyanna correct when she says that you never know how fortunate you are until you no longer have something?" among other literature based questions.
Math:
In math, we continue on Multiplication and Division, pivoting into division in which we practice dividing increasingly larger numbers and estimate quotients, all to practice mastery of the operation as it acts as the foundation for further units such as fractions.
History:
In history, we continue discussing Medieval Europe, exploring the intense faith that dominated the structure of society and how it influenced its leaders. In doing this we learn about the rival Christian churches, the roles of monks, and Charlemagne.
Science:
In science, we continue learning about Magnetism and Electricity, doing more demonstrations to further understand how magnetism affects compasses, the nature of static electricity, and the function of current electricity.
Remember, the blog is updated weekly. Be sure to come back frequently to see any upcoming events or changes in fourth grade.
