Quater 1 Final Week

 Hello!

The end is nigh! But in a good way. This is the final week of Quarter 1, wrapping up two months of dedicated work and watching students truly transform into capable fourth graders. For some, this transition was easy; for others, it is an ongoing process that we know they will conquer. Part of that transition is the increased workload, so please ensure all late work is finished before any assignments become anchors with scores of zero. Furthermore, all parents are expected to sign up for parent-teacher conferences, so please ensure you do that. But that'll be all she writes, so after tying a few loose ends, it'll be mandatory that all, parents and students alike, enjoy a well deserved break from school. You've earned it.

NEWS:

-Grammar Test on 10/3. Be sure students are prepared for this test by studying their parts of speech definitions, the questions that adjectives and adverbs answer, and diagrams for everything up to direct objects.

-10/6 Last Day of Quarter 1, which is a half day.

- Parent Teacher Conferences on 10/16 and 10/17. Every parent is expected to sign up for a parent teacher conference over the break. Here is the sign up link: https://archwaychandler.configio.com/search?cid=392

CURRICULUM:

ELA:

We have no new poems for POETRY RECITATION. Students will be preforming the poem "Ozymandias" by Percy B. Shelley if they have not yet. The first poem of Quarter 2 will be "Beowulf".

LITERATURE finishes Pollyanna. We will spend a large chunk of the week finishing the book in a mad dash. This is to complete the tale and set us up for Robin Hood in Quarter 2. Be sure your students have the correct edition of Robin Hood (Dover Evergreen Classics) prepared on day 1 of Quarter 2.

We continue our COMPOSITION program with practicing two different forms of writing. The first is a graded attempt of writing a introductory paragraph, combine all of the different skills we have practiced in the previous weeks and bring us closer to essay writing. The second is further summary practice.

In GRAMMAR, wrap up our final unit of the quarter: direct objects. We do this with a Quarter 1 Grammar Test on 10/3 that will encompass all of our subjects throughout the quarter.

In LATIN AND GREEK ROOTS, we will be reviewing our roots from the entire quarter. Students should constantly be studying every root as not only do they persist on every spelling test, but the year will culminate in a large roots test that will include all 74 roots, including ones from this quarter.

For PHILOSOPHY, we discuss the question: "Did you notice any similarities between the characters: Pollyanna and Dorothy (Wizard of Oz)?" among other literature based questions.

Math:

In math, we continue on Multiplication and Division, furthering a mastery of division by using estimates to confirm our quotients and by understanding word problems that incorporate the operation. This will lead to a review about this entire unit, but the test itself is not unit Quarter 2.

History:

In history, we continue discussing Medieval Europe, delving into the system of governance that ruled the era; Feudalism. This system built on loyalty shaped the lives of royalty and peasantry alike, and we look at those forms to understand the shortcoming of the monarchy and why it failed its people.

Science:

In science, we continue learning about Magnetism and Electricity, further connecting the two ideas. We do this with further discussion of circuits, including insulators and conductors, before combine the two concepts with electromagnets. This unit is guided with constant demonstration and hands on experimentation.

Remember, the blog is updated weekly. Be sure to come back frequently to see any upcoming events or changes in fourth grade.
