Greetings! I (Mrs. Shroll) have many to-dos on my list this weekend. I will be replacing backyard plants, cleaning bedrooms (that will be occupied by daughters at Thanksgiving), and finishing a big project from last summer. I painted all my maple kitchen cabinets white and now I need to finish the ceiling trim. Of course I am grading and prepping for next week. Please read on for school updates and our week ahead.

There is no school this Wednesday in honor of Veterans Day.  Thank you to all our soldiers of all branches both past and present for your service!!!! You are true heroes!

The deadline to decide on Quarter 3 learning (in person vs distance) is November 20.

In person families: Keep an eye out for a signup regarding our Robin Hood Party on Tuesday, Dec 15th. If you would like to volunteer in our classrooms on Wednesday mornings, check Signup Genius for your section's reading circles. With the weather changing, please have your student wear their Archway jacket to school. The children are doing a great job with wearing their masks, sanitizing, and following the rules of social distancing in our building.

Math: This week, your amazing mathematician will learn how to add and subtract fractions. They will work with improper fractions and mixed numbers as well. The next math test is on Nov 20th.

Science:  Our meteorology unit continues with studying the atmosphere. Experiments will involve air pressure and students will learn how the sun’s energy interacts with the gasses surrounding earth. They will learn the terms scatter, reflect and absorb.

History:  Students have a comprehension check on feudalism this Monday. Next, we learn about castles and how the rise of towns gave ordinary people the opportunity to move from their lord's protection to the city.

Language Arts:

Literature  Students finish Robin Hood this week. They have enjoyed discussing Robin Hood's actions. We will create a note organizer this week for their essay.

Grammar  State of being and linking verbs will be introduced.

Composition  Students continue with exercises in summarizing and memorizing dictated passages. They will learn the 5-paragraph essay structure and use class time to write their essay on whether Robin Hood was a hero or not.

Latin/Greek Roots  Words contain derivatives of scribe or graph.

Poetry  Norman and Saxon by Rudyard Kipling is our new poem. Students are expected to recite the entire poem all at once and it will be due Dec 11th. It was wonderful to hear recitations of Beowulf.

Thank you mothers, fathers, grandparents and all family for your continued support in our common goal: to facilitate the best educational experience possible for your student. We love our fourth graders and are grateful for you and your children. We unite together in our search for truth, beauty and goodness! Have a great weekend!
